So you can probably remember how excited you were when you could finally switch well enough between the basic major chords to piece a song together. Then the first time you played a small lead part over a backing or practice track on a CD. Now you’ve hit the point where you’ve got the basics covered but you want to be able to play faster.

This is a logical step that many people want to make but let me say one thing about learning to play guitar quicker. You want to improve your speed while maintaining your skill level. Anyone can play quickly and possibly if there’s a enough distortion going on no one will notice the misplayed notes. How ever for real skill you want to play well an quick.

Below are three exercises you can integrate into your practicing routines. They will start yielding you some results for both speed and accuracy in about a week or two. Keep at them and you’ll be a guitar speed demon in no time.

Scales up and Down the Neck

Do you know the basic pentatonic scale shapes? If not no worries if you’re using a guitar lessons dvd or some other form of self study course jump a head a little bit in your lesson book or videos to see if you can find a basic scale shape.

What you want to do is take that scale shape and start at fret number on right next to the nut and work your way all the way up the neck. So at fret number one play the scale starting from string number 6, Low E, and then play it right down to string number 1, High E. Now play the scale backwards as well back to string number 6.

Now move up to fret number two and do the same thing, then fret three and fret four. I’m sure you get the idea. Go all the way up the neck and then back down to number one. This might seem boring at first but it’s the beginning of building accuracy and consistency. Next we’re going to add some speed increases.

Metronome

If you don’t have a metronome I suggest you get one. They’re cheap and are a great tool to improve accuracy and speed that’s in time. Using a metronome when you practice will make it far easier to play along with other instruments later one.

Turn your metronome on and find a number of beats per minute that you feel comfortable with playing the same scale you played in the first exercise. No turn that back maybe 10 beats per minute or so. Start again at the first fret and play the scale up and then down. When you move up to fret number two increase the beats per minute by one. Do this at each fret and you’ll find that by the time you reach the top of the neck you’re playing faster then you felt comfortable when you started.

This is a great exercise to slowly introduce small speed increments. In time you can also start at a higher number of beats per minute on fret one and move upwards.

Up and Down Picking

If you’re starting to find it tough in the second exercise when you reach the top of the neck to keep up the picking speed by just plucking the string on the down stroke this is going to help. You can double hit the string both on the way down and the way up.

You’re going to want to practice this first just on it’s own on one string, then on a couple of strings and eventually working up to playing your scales this way.

It feels a little uncomfortable at first and you will make some mistakes. It can be difficult to get your picking hand in time with your fretting hand but it will come. This tip will add a whole other dimension to your speed of playing.

So that’s it, those three tips will improve your speed and accuracy so you can become a faster guitar player. Keep at it consistently and you’ll see results in just a week or two but don’t stop there. Speed and accuracy are the things great guitar players are made of. Keep pushing yourself to improve your speed and do it with new scales or riffs you learn to push your limits.

So you want to learn how to play guitar, and you want to be good at it. How long does it take to become a good guitar player? Can you actually learn to play a song in just one weekend as some products suggest? What’s the best method of learning to play the guitar? This article will look at these three questions because I believe the first question in a beginners mind is how long will it take until I’m good? So let’s get started.

How long does it take to become a good guitar player?

This is really going to depend on how you learn to play. Self taught players sometimes take longer to become good guitar players because they don’t learn the more difficult/boring concepts of keys, modes and scales up front. This isn’t to say they can’t go back and learn it later but an individual who takes private lessons will have a better foundation to build on as they progress.

Choosing a good program to follow as a self taught guitar player will help ensure you learn the right skills at the right time. I’d suggest a guitar lessons dvd program similar to Learn and Master guitar which covers all the basics, theory, advanced chords and different musical styles.

On the average I think a beginner guitar player can expect to be piecing songs together using basic chords in 6-8 months and be a well rounded guitar player after about 2 years assuming they continue to learn and progress their understanding of guitar.

Can you learn to Play Guitar In a Weekend?

There are some digital products on the Internet that suggest you can learn to play guitar in just one weekend. Since I know how to play guitar I have never been able to test one of these programs. Of course, since I know how to play guitar I know how long it takes to learn. I can assure you that what I’ve learned over the last 10 years could not have been learned in one weekend.

I do believe it’s possible to teach someone to play some basic chords and strumming techniques if the individual is committed and practices diligently. How ever they wouldn’t be considered a “good” guitar player in my books.

I think these programs and products are best left alone and you should look to another alternative to teach yourself. Anything worth doing well is worth taking the time to learn it correctly.

What is the Best Method to Learn Guitar?

I doubt few would argue that taking one-on-one individual private guitar lessons is the best method of learning to play guitar. You get the most attention and interaction from your instructor, and they can tailor their lessons to your likes and dislikes. How ever, in saying that, there are some great self study guitar lessons for beginners available.

DVD lesson products, like Learn and Master Guitar, come with supplemental lesson books, online support and jam cd’s for practicing can now rival a private instructors lesson quality. Combine this with the fact you’re free to learn when you want and practice when you want to since no lesson schedule and I believe more people will start to learn from DVD self study courses in the coming years.

So to answer that question that was asked at the beginning of this article. How long does it take to be a good guitar player. After 1-2 years you will have a solid understanding of guitar basics, scales, keys, advanced chords and different musical styles. At this point, pending you keep up your practicing and continue learning, you could consider yourself a good guitar player

When it comes to learning guitar there are websites and books on what’s good and what’s bad.

Here are some tips and ideas of what to look for in an easy guitar song to learn when you are first starting out.

There are so many places to look for easy guitar song to learn but the best place to start is in a basic music book. The front of the book will generally have many easy guitar songs to learn and you can work your way through them at your own pace. Music books also contain basic riffs and chords and will walk you through the learning process step by step.

Playing by ear requires concentration and a good ear for music, once you mastered this you will be well on you way to becoming an advance guitar student.

Easy guitar songs are where you should start when you are learning to play the guitar. Here are some other resources that can help:

There is no easy way to the learn guitar. It’s a tough instrument to play. It takes a lot of practice. Some people can pick it up and instinctively begin to play it and others take a while to learn. Below are some tips and tricks that will give you good head start but by far the best way to learn to play guitar is to always practice and never give up.

Always make sure your equipment is in good order and you guitar is tuned properly there is no point in trying to play guitar when you do every thing right and it still sounds wrong. Also try and find a space that is quite and free from distraction and noise if you do not concentrate it will make it a lot harder then it should be.

Try to learn everything you can about your guitar. Find out what every thing is called and be able to find it quickly. One of the best ways to learn to play guitar is to know your guitar. Guitars are not all the same and each one sounds different, you will find this out as your experience grows and hopefully your enjoyment and appreciation of them does too.

Be careful you don’t start too high you do not want to frustrate your self on the first day. Pick something easy to begin with, a lot of music books start you off with some simple strumming patterns and old songs. The best way to learn to play guitar is to start small and work your way up until you feel confident to progress to something harder and more entertaining.

By now I would hope you have the basics sorted out and are ready to move on to something harder. Try to find and artist you like and are familiar with and try and replicate parts of there songs. Sheet music for most bands are wildly available and I think is the most rewarding and the best way to learn to play guitar, because you are making a song you know and like.

When you feel like your ready to progress try to focus all you time on one song and when you have it burnt it your memory organize a small group of friend or family to listen to you play. The best way to learn to play guitar is to have confidence in your self because the guitar is meant to be enjoyed by everyone. It is not much fun sitting in a dark room playing to your self.

Hopefully you can be motivated to learn to play guitar. It can be an enjoyable thing to learn and experience.

Once you get the bug for wanting to learn how to play guitar you will eventually want to be able to read guitar music. Many guitarist start off by teaching themselves guitar music after studying a piece of music on the radio or on a CD. This is a great starting point and will allow you to understand different notes and cords.

On a guitar, the tab staff has 6 horizontal lines. Each one of these horizontal lines represents a string on the instrument. The line on the bottom of the staff is the lowest “E” string on the guitar. The next line up from the bottom line represents the “A” string and so on. These are the basic elements when you learn how to read guitar music.

When your guitar tab displays numbers stacked vertically in a series, this is an indication to play these notes at the same time. When the guitar tab displays numbers in a series gradually on an incline, this is indicating these notes should be played one at a time. These are the first things you should know when you learn how to read guitar music.

Rhythmic notation is how the songs rhythm should be heard when played. When you first learn how to read guitar music you should try songs you can access on a CD or radio so you can hear the rhythm before you commence learning the chords. Hearing the rhythm will make learning much easier.

An A major chord is the first chord you will learn to play and the first chord you will see when you learn how to read guitar music. An A major chord contains only 3 different notes. No more then 3 notes are used in an A major chord and these can generally be repeated more then once.

The key when you learn how to read guitar music is discipline. Learning good techniques and having an excellent teacher will ensure you get the most out of your lessons. Once you have learned the basics of guitar music, you will find it easier to progress onto advanced guitar music.

When you learn how to read guitar music it is important to watch how the music is written. Take notice of the use of the chords in different sections of the music and take note of how easy the chords flow. When you become more advanced and start to write your own guitar music, these techniques will help you

Seems like everyone wants to learn guitar some time in their life. They see how glamorous it looks like from the rock stars in videos and concerts. Seems like quite the life. Learning guitar takes time and a lot of practice. There are many people who learn guitar and never hit the big time, simply playing for the love of the instrument. Whatever your motivation is you will find that there are many ways to learn guitar.

Learning is different for each individual Plus each person has different constraints such as jobs, responsibilities, etc. You have to find the time for lessons and practice to achieve your goal of learning the guitar. If you’re not at the level you want, maybe it’s because you haven’t found the best way to learn guitar yet. There are several ways to learn how to play the guitar. Listed below are only a few of them.

Guitar Theory Books

There are thousands of theory books on the market that teach you how to play the guitar. Some of them are even very good and can provide you with all the information you need. Books are an inexpensive and comfortable strategy to learn how to play the guitar. Unfortunately, experience shows that for many of us they just don’t work. However, if you are a very patient person, a theory book might be the best way to learn guitar.

Learn Guitar From Videos

Video guitar lessons are available on DVDs and video tapes in almost any music store, as well as on virtual shops. In addition, there are also some video lessons available online. Some of them are even free. Video lessons are more dynamic and have a better chance of keeping you focused. They have the advantage of allowing you to practice at home whenever you find the time to do it. However, the inconvenience is that you can’t benefit from the personalized attention and useful feedback a teacher could provide.

Get Yourself a Tutor

If you are willing to dedicate some money, private lessons are definitely the best way to learn guitar. A good teacher can design a customized teaching program to suit your learning style and provide you with individualized attention and positive feedback to get you motivated. In addition, he/she can also spot and correct your mistakes very fast.

The Lucky: Learn Guitar By Ear

There are a few lucky folks who can simply learn guitar by ear. They just instinctively know how to play the guitar and can play the tune simply listening to it. This is a gift that cannot be easily taught. You either can listen and learn to play guitar or you cannot. Most people will have to grind their way through lessons and lots of practice.

Have fun learning to play guitar. It should not be stressful. Sometimes you need to try several learning methods before finding the one that works best for you. Not everyone will find private lessons effective for them in learning guitar. Not everyone will enjoy learning from a video. You just have to find what works best for you.
